Histoplasmosis is a fungal infection caused by Histoplasma capsulatum, a microscopic organism that thrives in soil and organic material enriched by bat and bird droppings. In Florida attics, bat guano creates ideal conditions for this fungus to grow and produce spores. The spores are invisible to the naked eye and have no odor — you cannot detect them without testing.

Infection occurs when spores become airborne and are inhaled. This happens when dried guano is disturbed — by foot traffic in the attic, HVAC airflow, renovation work, or even the natural settling of a structure. Once inhaled, spores travel to the lungs and can spread to other organs in severe cases.

Most healthy adults who inhale a small number of spores experience mild or no symptoms. You cannot detect histoplasmosis spores visually or by smell. The only way to confirm their presence is professional air quality testing. However, any attic with bat guano accumulation should be treated as potentially contaminated — the risk is too serious to assume otherwise. If bats have been in your attic, schedule a professional inspection and remediation.

Can I clean up bat guano myself?

We strongly advise against it. Bat guano cleanup requires N100 respirators, full-body Tyvek suits, HEPA air filtration, enzyme treatment, and proper hazardous waste disposal. A standard dust mask does not filter fungal spores. Attempting DIY cleanup without proper PPE dramatically increases your spore exposure and risk of infection.

My doctor says I have a respiratory illness. Could it be histoplasmosis?
