Every week we get calls from Tampa Bay homeowners who stuffed steel wool into a gap, sprayed expanding foam around a soffit, and found bats back inside within a week. Sometimes within 24 hours. It is not a fluke — it is physics and bat behavior working against materials that were never designed for this application.
Steel wool and expanding foam are legitimate building materials. They work well for the applications they were designed for. Bat exclusion is not one of those applications. Understanding why they fail is the first step to understanding what actually works.

Why Steel Wool Always Fails
It rusts through in 3–6 months
Steel wool is iron. Florida's humidity and heat accelerate oxidation dramatically. A steel wool plug that feels solid in October is a crumbling rust mass by spring. The gap it was filling is now open again — and bats have been probing it the entire time.
Bats push through it while it's still intact
Brazilian free-tailed bats — the most common species in Tampa Bay — can compress their bodies to fit through gaps as small as ⅜ of an inch. Steel wool stuffed into a gap leaves air channels that bats navigate around. They do not need to chew through it; they squeeze past it.
It does not bond to the surface
Steel wool is friction-fit at best. It does not adhere to concrete, wood, stucco, or metal. Thermal expansion and contraction, wind pressure, and the physical pressure of bats probing the gap all work to dislodge it over time.
It traps moisture and accelerates rot
Steel wool holds moisture against wood framing and sheathing. In a Florida attic, this accelerates wood rot at exactly the point where you need structural integrity to hold a proper seal. You end up with a bigger problem than the bat gap you started with.
It is not rated for exterior use
Standard steel wool has no UV resistance, no weather resistance, and no adhesion properties. It is a kitchen scrubbing pad. Using it as a building sealant is a category error — it was never tested or rated for this application.
Bottom line on steel wool: It is not a building sealant. It was never rated, tested, or designed for exterior bat exclusion. Every steel wool plug fails — the only question is whether it fails in weeks or months.

Why Expanding Foam Gets Chewed Through
Bats chew through cured foam in hours
Cured expanding foam has a compressive strength of roughly 25–30 psi. A bat's bite force is more than sufficient to penetrate it. Bats that are motivated to re-enter a roost — and they are highly motivated; they return to the same roost site year after year — will chew through a foam plug within hours of discovering it.
It shrinks away from the surface as it cures
Expanding foam expands as it cures, then contracts slightly as it dries. This contraction pulls the foam away from the edges of the gap, leaving a thin channel around the perimeter. That channel is often enough for a bat to squeeze through without disturbing the foam at all.
UV exposure degrades it rapidly outdoors
Exposed expanding foam degrades in direct sunlight within 6–12 months. It yellows, becomes brittle, and crumbles. Any exterior foam application that is not painted or covered will fail structurally within a year in Florida's UV environment.
It does not work on active roost entry points
Sealing an active bat entry point with foam — without first excluding the colony — traps bats inside the structure. Trapped bats will chew through foam, drywall, and insulation to find an exit. This creates far more damage than the original gap.
It cannot be used during maternity season
Sealing any entry point during Florida's April 15 – August 15 maternity season blackout is illegal under Florida Statute 379.231. Foam applied during this window traps flightless pups inside. This is a wildlife violation regardless of the material used.
Bottom line on expanding foam: Bats chew through it. It shrinks away from surfaces. It degrades in Florida sun. And sealing an active entry point without first excluding the colony traps bats inside — creating a far worse problem.

What Actually Works
Professional-Grade Exclusion Materials
Galvanized hardware cloth (½" mesh)
16-gauge galvanized hardware cloth is the workhorse of bat exclusion. It is rigid, cannot be compressed or chewed through, and is rated for exterior use. Properly installed with mechanical fasteners and caulked edges, it lasts 20+ years.
Polyurethane or silicone caulk
Exterior-grade polyurethane or silicone caulk bonds to wood, masonry, metal, and stucco. It remains flexible through thermal cycling, resists UV degradation, and cannot be compressed by bat pressure. Surface must be clean and free of bat grease before application.
Metal flashing
Aluminum or galvanized steel flashing is used to seal larger gaps at roof edges, ridge caps, and parapet walls. It is mechanically fastened, not friction-fit, and provides a rigid barrier that bats cannot compress or chew through.
Foam backer rod + caulk
For large irregular gaps, closed-cell foam backer rod is used as a backing material — not as the seal itself. The backer rod fills the void; the caulk applied over it provides the actual seal. This is the correct use of foam in bat exclusion.
One-way exclusion devices
At active entry points, one-way exclusion tubes or netting are installed before any sealing occurs. These allow bats to exit but not re-enter. After 3–7 nights of monitoring confirm the colony has vacated, the device is removed and the entry point permanently sealed.
Copper mesh
For small gaps in masonry and around pipes, copper mesh is an alternative to steel wool that does not rust. It is compressed into the gap and sealed over with caulk. Unlike steel wool, copper mesh retains structural integrity indefinitely.

Critical Timing — The Maternity Season Blackout
No bat exclusion — regardless of material — can be performed between April 15 and August 15 in Florida. This is not a recommendation; it is Florida Statute 379.231. Steel Wool & Foam FAQ
Can I use steel wool as a temporary fix while I wait for professional exclusion?
No. Stuffing steel wool into an active entry point during the maternity season is a wildlife violation. Outside the maternity season, a temporary steel wool plug may deter casual entry for a few days, but it will not hold and may give you false confidence that the problem is solved. Call us for an inspection — we can assess the situation and schedule exclusion properly.
What about copper mesh — is that better than steel wool?
Yes, significantly. Copper does not rust, so it retains structural integrity indefinitely. However, copper mesh alone is still not a permanent seal — it must be used as a backing material with caulk applied over it. It is appropriate for small gaps around pipes and in masonry, but not as a standalone exclusion material for active bat entry points.
I already sealed with foam and the bats are back. What now?
This is one of the most common calls we receive. The foam needs to be removed, the gap properly assessed, and a correct exclusion performed. If the colony is still active, we install one-way exclusion devices first, monitor for 3–7 nights, then permanently seal with appropriate materials. Do not re-apply foam.
How do I know if I have an active roost versus occasional entry?
A dusk emergence count is the definitive method. We position observers at all potential exit points at dusk and count bats exiting. A colony of 20 or more bats exiting from a single point is an active roost. Occasional entry — a single bat finding its way in — is a different problem with different solutions.
Does professional exclusion use any foam at all?
Yes — foam backer rod is used as a backing material in large irregular gaps, with caulk applied over it as the actual seal. The distinction is that foam backer rod is never the seal itself; it is a substrate for caulk. Expanding foam sprayed directly into a gap as the primary seal is not a professional exclusion technique.
How long does professional bat proofing last?
Professional bat proofing with galvanized hardware cloth, metal flashing, and exterior-grade caulk should last 10–20 years on most structures. The limiting factor is usually the structure itself — wood rot, shifting, and weathering can open new gaps over time. We recommend a visual inspection every 3–5 years.
