Sealed Your Home But Still Have Bats?

You caulked the gaps, stuffed the holes, maybe even called someone — and the bats are still there. Here's why DIY and incomplete exclusions fail, and what a proper exclusion actually requires.

Why Sealing Doesn't Always Work

Bat exclusion is not the same as gap-sealing. Sealing gaps is one component of exclusion — but done incorrectly, it can trap bats inside your structure, create new entry points as bats search for a way out, or simply miss the actual entry points entirely.

Bats can enter through a gap as small as 3/8 of an inch — roughly the diameter of a pencil. A single missed gap, an improperly installed exclusion device, or work done during the wrong time of year can render an entire exclusion attempt ineffective.

In Florida, bat exclusion is also regulated. Work done during the maternity season (April 15 through August 15) that seals bats inside — including pups that cannot yet fly — is a violation of Florida state law. If exclusion was attempted during this window, it may have created a legal and structural problem rather than solving one.

Why Bats Are Still Getting In

The primary entry point was missed

Most homeowners seal the gaps they can see — but bats typically enter through gaps that are difficult to spot: ridge cap joints, soffit-fascia intersections, gaps behind gutters, chimney flashing voids, and HVAC penetrations. If the main entry point wasn't identified and sealed, the bats simply continue using it.

No one-way exclusion device was installed

Most common

Sealing a gap while bats are roosting inside traps them. A proper exclusion requires installing a one-way exclusion device — a tube or netting that allows bats to exit but not re-enter — over the primary entry point, leaving it in place for 3–7 days, then sealing after all bats have exited. Sealing without a one-way device is not exclusion.

Work was done during maternity season

Common

From April 15 through August 15, Florida law prohibits exclusion that would trap bats inside. Pups born during this period cannot fly and cannot exit through a one-way device. If exclusion was attempted during this window, pups may still be inside — and the colony will not fully leave until the pups are flight-capable.

Wrong materials were used

Common

Steel wool, spray foam, and caulk alone are not adequate for bat exclusion. Bats can push through steel wool, chew through foam, and find gaps in caulk applications. Proper exclusion uses hardware cloth (1/4" galvanized), copper mesh, and professional-grade sealants applied to a properly prepared surface.

Secondary entry points opened up

Common

When bats are blocked from their primary entry point, they search aggressively for alternatives. If the primary was sealed without a one-way device, bats trapped inside may have created new entry points — pushing through weakened soffits, damaged fascia, or gaps that weren't present before.

The roost scent remains

Moderate

Bats return to roosts by scent. Even after a successful exclusion, the pheromone scent left by the colony in the roost area can attract new bats — particularly if the guano and urine were not removed. Without remediation, a sealed structure can be re-colonized within one to two seasons.

The Maternity Season Problem

Florida's maternity season runs April 15 through August 15. During this period, female bats give birth and raise pups that are initially flightless. Florida law prohibits any exclusion work that would trap bats — including pups — inside a structure.

If exclusion was attempted during this window without proper one-way devices, or if gaps were sealed while bats were inside, you may have a legal problem in addition to a bat problem. Trapped pups will die inside the structure, creating an odor problem and a guano accumulation that continues to grow.

The correct approach during maternity season is to seal all secondary entry points — every gap except the primary entry — and wait until after August 15 to install the one-way exclusion device and complete the seal. This is the only legal and effective approach during the blackout period.

What a Proper Exclusion Actually Requires

Full inspection — every gap, every entry point

A proper exclusion begins with a systematic inspection of the entire structure: roofline, ridge cap, soffit-fascia intersections, gable vents, chimney flashing, HVAC penetrations, and any gap larger than 3/8". The primary entry point must be identified before any sealing begins.

Seal all secondary entry points first

Every gap except the primary entry point is sealed with appropriate materials — hardware cloth, copper mesh, or professional sealant depending on the gap type. This forces all bat activity through the primary entry, which will receive the one-way device.

Install one-way exclusion device at primary entry

A one-way exclusion tube or exclusion netting is installed over the primary entry point. Bats can exit through the device but cannot re-enter. This must be done outside the maternity season (before April 15 or after August 15) to avoid trapping flightless pups.

Monitor for 3–7 days

The exclusion device is left in place for a minimum of 3 days — typically 5–7 — to ensure all bats have exited. Monitoring at dusk confirms bat activity has ceased at the primary entry point.

Remove device and seal primary entry permanently

Once monitoring confirms the colony has vacated, the one-way device is removed and the primary entry point is permanently sealed with appropriate materials. The seal is inspected to confirm no gaps remain.

Guano remediation and odor treatment

The roost area is cleaned of guano and urine, and treated with an enzyme-based odor neutralizer and antimicrobial agent. This removes the pheromone scent that would otherwise attract new colonies and eliminates the biohazard left by the previous colony.

Why This Is Hard to Get Right

Bat exclusion has a high failure rate when attempted without experience. The combination of finding every entry point, using the right materials, timing the work correctly around Florida's maternity season, and following the one-way device protocol requires knowledge that most homeowners and general contractors don't have. A failed exclusion attempt often makes the problem worse — trapping bats, creating new entry points, or triggering a legal violation.

I sealed all the gaps I could find but bats are still getting in. What did I miss?

The most commonly missed entry points are ridge cap joints (where two roof planes meet at the peak), the gap between the soffit and fascia board, gaps behind gutters where they attach to the fascia, chimney flashing voids, and HVAC penetrations through the roofline. Bats need only 3/8" — a gap that's easy to overlook on a visual inspection from the ground.

Can I seal the bats out during summer in Florida?

Not completely. Florida law prohibits exclusion work that would trap bats inside during the maternity season (April 15–August 15). During this period, you can seal secondary entry points, but the primary entry must remain open with a one-way device — or left unsealed — until after August 15. Sealing bats inside during this period is a violation of Florida state law.

I had someone seal my home and the bats came back. Is that normal?

It's common when the exclusion was incomplete. The most likely causes are: the primary entry point was missed, no one-way device was used (bats were sealed inside and found a new exit), or the guano and roost scent were not removed (attracting a new colony). A proper re-inspection will identify which failure occurred.

How do I know if bats are still inside after sealing?

Watch the roofline at dusk — 15 to 30 minutes after sunset. Bats exit to feed every night. If bats are still inside, you will see them emerging from somewhere on the structure. If you sealed the primary entry but bats are still emerging, they found or created a new exit point.

What if I sealed bats inside by accident?

Open the sealed entry point immediately. Bats trapped inside will die, creating an odor problem and a guano accumulation you cannot access. If it's during maternity season, contact a licensed Florida bat exclusion specialist — they can assess whether pups are present and advise on the correct approach.

How long does a professional bat exclusion take?

The active exclusion period — from installing the one-way device to final sealing — takes 5–7 days.
