Patching gaps and plugging holes looks like exclusion. It isn't. Here's the exact difference between a professional bat seal-up and basic patching — and why one ends your bat problem permanently while the other creates a new one.
The core distinction
Two Very Different Approaches
When most people hear 'seal up the house,' they picture caulk guns, steel wool, and foam — filling every gap they can find. That's patching. It addresses the symptom (open gaps) without addressing the problem (a live colony inside the structure).
Professional bat seal-up is a sequenced, protocol-driven process. It begins with a systematic inspection to locate every entry point, proceeds with strategic sealing of secondary entries, installs a one-way exclusion device at the primary entry, monitors until the colony has fully vacated, and only then permanently seals the final opening.
The difference isn't cosmetic. Patching without exclusion protocol traps bats inside, violates Florida law during maternity season, and often forces the colony to create new entry points. Professional seal-up eliminates the colony first — then seals the structure.

Traps bats inside the structure
CriticalIf bats are roosting when gaps are sealed, they're now trapped. Trapped bats will die inside walls and attic spaces, creating a decomposition odor that can last months. Before they die, they will search aggressively for an exit — often creating new entry points through weakened soffits, damaged fascia, or gaps that weren't there before.

CriticalFrom April 15 through August 15, Florida law prohibits exclusion work that traps bats inside. Pups born during this period are flightless and cannot exit. What Professional Seal-Up Requires
Systematic inspection — every entry point identified
Before any material is applied, every gap larger than 3/8" is located and documented: ridge cap joints, soffit-fascia intersections, gable vents, chimney flashing, HVAC penetrations, gaps behind gutters. The primary entry point — where the colony enters and exits — is identified separately from secondary gaps.
Secondary entries sealed with appropriate materials
Every gap except the primary entry is sealed using materials matched to the gap type: hardware cloth for large openings, copper mesh for medium gaps, professional-grade sealant for cracks and joints. This concentrates all bat activity through the primary entry, which will receive the one-way device.
One-way exclusion device installed at primary entry
A one-way exclusion tube or exclusion netting is installed over the primary entry. Bats exit to feed at dusk and cannot re-enter. This step must be performed outside the Florida maternity season (before April 15 or after August 15) to avoid trapping flightless pups.
Dusk monitoring — 3 to 7 days
The structure is monitored at dusk for a minimum of 3 days — typically 5 to 7 — to confirm bat activity has ceased at the primary entry. No bats emerging means the colony has fully vacated. Monitoring also catches any secondary entry points that were missed in the initial inspection.
One-way device removed, primary entry permanently sealed
Once monitoring confirms vacancy, the exclusion device is removed and the primary entry is permanently sealed with appropriate materials. The completed seal is inspected to confirm no gaps remain anywhere on the structure.
Guano remediation and scent elimination
The roost area is cleaned of accumulated guano and urine, treated with an enzyme-based odor neutralizer, and fogged with antimicrobial agent. This eliminates the pheromone scent that would attract a new colony and removes the Histoplasma capsulatum fungal spore risk from the structure.

Why does the sealing sequence matter?
