Bat droppings accumulate directly below the roost entry point. On eave roosts, this means guano on the siding, on window sills below the roofline, or on the foundation at the base of the wall. Fresh guano is dark and moist; older accumulations are dry and crumble easily.

Grease marks at the entry gap

Bats have oily fur. Repeated use of the same entry point leaves a dark brown or black grease stain on the fascia board, soffit edge, or roofing material around the gap. Grease marks are one of the most reliable indicators of an active entry point.

Dusk emergence activity

Bats exit to feed at dusk, typically 20–30 minutes after sunset. A colony in your eaves will produce a visible stream of bats exiting from one or two points along the roofline. Even a small colony of 20–30 bats is visible during a dusk emergence count.

Why Eave Colonies Cannot Be Ignored

Eave colonies deposit guano inside the soffit cavity and along the top of the fascia board. Over time this accumulation can weigh enough to bow or crack vinyl soffit panels, and the moisture and acidity accelerates rot in wood fascia and rafter tails.

Histoplasmosis risk from dried guano

Dried bat guano can harbor Histoplasma capsulatum, a fungal spore that causes histoplasmosis when inhaled. Guano accumulations in enclosed eave cavities are a documented exposure risk during any work near the roofline.

Rabies exposure from direct contact

Any bat found on the ground, acting disoriented, or accessible to people or pets should be treated as a potential rabies exposure. Do not handle bats with bare hands. If contact occurred, contact the Hillsborough County Health Department immediately.

How We Remove Eave Colonies

Full Exterior Inspection

We inspect the entire roofline — fascia, soffit, rake boards, ridge cap, and all roof penetrations — not just the visible entry point. Eave colonies often use multiple gaps along the same roofline. Every gap larger than ½ inch is documented.

Dusk Emergence Count

We perform a dusk emergence count to identify all active exit points and estimate colony size. This step is essential — sealing secondary gaps while the primary entry is still active pushes bats to find new entry points elsewhere on the structure.

One-Way Exclusion Devices

Exclusion tubes or netting are installed at all active entry points. Bats can exit through the device but cannot re-enter. We do not seal the primary entry point until the colony has fully vacated — typically 3 to 7 nights of monitoring.

Permanent Sealing

Once the colony has vacated, exclusion devices are removed and all entry points are permanently sealed. For eave gaps, this typically involves galvanized hardware cloth, metal flashing, or exterior-grade caulk depending on the gap size and material.

Do not attempt to seal the entry point yourself — it is a wildlife violation and will trap bats inside your structure.

Homeowners typically seal the one gap they can see — the obvious entry point. Bats use multiple gaps along the same roofline. Sealing one gap without finding the others pushes the colony to adjacent entry points within days.
